Emma lives and works in the Cambrian Mountains, walking the hills and working from direct observation en plain air. Fast, loose drawings and paintings encapsulate the freedom of being outside in nature and are then abstracted in the studio, retaining a deep-rooted connection to the land.

She is drawn to the chaos, power and energy in the landscape, always returning to drawing, searching for the essence of forms and the unknown within liminal spaces.

She embraces serendipity and the accidental, letting colour and expressive marks awaken feelings in the viewer.

Born in Machynlleth, Wales in 1965, Emma Shuckburgh studied at City and Guilds School of Art and Camberwell School of Art. She worked in design, printing and textile design for more than 30 years, later dealing in Antiques and Vintage as Rosebud & Violet.
